Venue Safety
22nd Sep 2008

On a variety of tours recently there has been various discussion on safety in the touring venues I have visited. Additionally EVANZ members have stated they are supporting the 'Guideline' document.
So far I am not seeing much eveidence of this. Or, in a couple of cases there is an over commitment - admirable but obstructive.

Those of us who have been in the business for a while....... remember a time before Portable Equipment Testing when it was best to poke a lantern with a stick before picking it up, and plugging it in meant taking your life in your hands. I, for one, am glad that lanterns are checked once a year.
There is much that is good about OSH but it gets a bad press because it is seen as preventing people from working the way they want to.
I once had an argument with a director who was annoyed that I wanted time to test a pyro. He said he would be happy to put down a pot of gunpowder, and to get a member of stage management to drop a match on it at the appropriate moment. "That's" he said "how we used to do it"

Where does the outdoor live event fit in the entertainment system? I have seen setups which to all intents and purposes resemble a building site yet I witness no high viz/hard hats/safety boots. In one case recently at a concert venue a stage crew person thought it OK to be wearing crocs! In this day and age do we wait until a serious accident forces a change?
