Smoke Effects

At my college this year we have a new school hall/auditorium and are now starting preparations for our first major production in the facility.
A problem we have come across is that the fire system only has smoke detectors and we would really like to use smoke effects in our musical (this year and in the future).
I have asked both the local fire dept. and the fire system installer and they have given me contradicting info.

Do you know anyone that would be able to provide me with information about how we can work around this and maybe let me know how other theatres in NZ tackle this situation?
