āDo we as a community need to set minimum operational standards for the continued use of venues, what should these standards be, how do we enforce thisā
This session highlighted a definite requirement for standards for venue design and operation.
It is strongly suggested that the Ministry of Education is contacted to outline our communities concerns of many performing arts venues at educational facilities.
Engage the wider community involved in the design and operation of entertainment venues, eg Architect Institute, Engineers Institute, LTNZ, Education Gazzette.
Any standards to be general initially, not prescriptive.
Use the ETNZ website forum as standards evolve.
Set up an ETNZ sub-committee to start the process of writing a standards document. The following people are willing to be involved: Phil Conroy (suggested Chairperson of the committee), Derek Simpson, Charlotte Gordon, Steve Reader, Richard Wiltshire, Grant

As theatre practitioners we all have experience of working in beautifully built but badly designed theatres.( I could name some names....)
Educational establishments are particularly prone to this as they are often designed by architechs with little theatre knowledge and equipped by Art teachers who give up responsibilty to suppliers who sometimes spec inappropriate equipment at inflated prices. (Fat Frog anyone?)

Whilst I applaud the idea of producing a set of design and operation guidelines, and the people you have lined up to produce them are more than up to the job,I don't see how standards, however well intentioned, can be enforced in a free market.

The best that we can hope for is to try to get involved in new theatre projects when they arise and to educate both designers and those that commission new buildings that we are worth listening to and that our input can be positive and cost effective.
